Anti Aging Tech DIY Education and Research
By: elad
In his book “Ending Aging”, Aubrey DE Grey laid out an excellent set of strategies to research and develop a cure for aging. I want to explore these strategies from a Do It Yourself, DIY tech, home gamer perspective. I mean think about it... top prize is... well it's... immortality!
Home based DIYers have more high tech tools available now than at any time in history and the new unique information generated this year is more than the previous 5000 years combined, and don't forget , it's increasing exponentially. Much is free via the net so maybe we should upgrade to some really big, size appropriate goals to put it all to use. Goals like, going to the moon... been there done that, last century. How about “Fix Aging and all Disease”... just because we can (maybe), and because of the undeserved immense amount of suffering it has and continues to inflict on everyone, sooner or later. That is a size appropriate, worthwhile goal.
Just imagine 10,000 DIYers worldwide applying new tech knowledge and abilities to DE Grey's 7 SENS, Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence. That could yield 10,000 man years, per year, of generally open (available to all) research and development. If China and India play... that goes up by a factor of say 10. It would be extremely difficult and expensive for a corporation or government to match that potential.
For now, I want an inexpensive, nano size appropriate DIY bio platform that links to my home computer for DNA origami and nano robotics experiments. Computer simulation, cell reprogramming, artificial intelligence, open source software and hardware, DNA origami and CAD for health maintainance nano robotics all seem potentially, fun, inexpensive, safe, and productive approaches to DIY AntiAgingTech projects.
My size appropriate cell repair platform will not be mice with all their baggage, c.elegans worms to feed, fruit flies to catch or zebra fish tanks to maintain... unless necessary. They are too time consuming, expensive, dirty and slow. Using a test tube with DNA in it is a lot like looking for one fish in the ocean. No more giant test tubes, room sized microscopes & computers, or vacuum tubes.
How about an inexpensive acrylic sheet with micro pits for hundreds or thousands of concurrent experiments and a precise xyz computer controlled tool platform? Add a laser to do imaging, temperature control, cell exterminations, spectral analysis, burning & cutting, a net camera/microscope, spectro photometry, afm nano tweezers, micro pipette platform and a centrifuge spin cycle. Don't forget data bases and control software to execute and monitor all those experiments. Next, maybe a modified ink jet printer for cell culture experiments. Then, throw in an expert system to evolve into a goal based artificial intelligence on human rejuvenation therapies plus health maintainance nano robotics and you've got my plan for a DIY AntiAgingTech platform.
I've taken a first step down this road by organizing and burning a collection of my favorite DIY tools; Genome Workbench, NanoEngineer, TinkerCell, Python, educational tutorials and research software and Open Office to manage my projects, to a dvd for my own use. Most are open source you could download, unpack & install yourself from the net. If you have a slow modem, want to explore or jumpstart your own research and education, I built a sales page at AntiAgingTech Office Suite.
Granted, this might take some time but it will be much better when 10,000 DIYers are moveing in the same direction.
